Looking to build strength in the top of the pullup?
If you can pull yourself halfway up or maybe even a few inches from the bar during a pullup then try this!
Attach a band to the top of the lat pulldown machine and loop around the wide lat pulldown bar.
The band will increase in tension the closer the bar gets to your collar bone. Inevitably the most tension or the hardest part of the pulldown for you will be in this position.
Increase the weight and band strength as needed. Start with:
🔥3 sets of 12 reps
🔥hold down for 1 sec. In bottom
🔥perform with 3 second eccentric (up)

A couple of weeks ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to share my and Hijabi Ballers’ story with a great group of women at Nike Canada’s Workout class. I spoke about my three crazy dreams:
1. When I was younger I always dreamt of being part of a sports team. I never grew up playing organized sports in a league, so I never felt like I was good enough to be on a team. In high school, my school introduced rugby for the first time- and nobody knew what it was or how to play. I saw this as a chance to finally be on a level playing field (literally) as everyone else. I felt confident to try out for the team and actually went on to win MVP in my final year 🙌🏼 This was my crazy dream come true. Playing rugby gave me a sense of belonging and purpose.
2. When I broke my leg (tibia and fibula, snapped right in half) during a tackle, after 6 years of playing rugby, I was devastated. I knew my recovery would take long but I couldn’t bear being so distant from the sports community. I had given a bit of thought to the idea of creating an organization/space where Muslim female athletes could be celebrated. There would be times when I would think about this day and night- I really wanted to build something sustainable, and well thought out that would directly serve the needs of the community. I desperately wanted to be involved in sports and creating valuable sports opportunities for others. I always thought it was rare/unconventional to be a Hijabi playing sports- because that’s what people, the media and our culture made me think. When I stared this project, I asked people to connect me with hijab wearing athletes in Toronto that they knew- and I got over 50 names in just two weeks. And not just their names. Their stories, challenges, struggles, passions and visions. I couldn’t turn back. I was in the right place at the right time and my dream of giving back to the sports community was coming true.
3. My next dream is playing rugby again. Full out tackle, contact rugby. I attended my first contact practice last week. It felt amazing.
Thank you to Nike Canada and Narrative for the opportunity and to all of you for supporting us every step of the way. 💕💪🏾 @ Elle Fitness and Social

Dear Fitness Friends,
The NFLA Board of Directors if pleased to announce the results of our 1st Canadian Fitness Trends Survey! Below is the official press release and infographic:
The National Fitness Leadership Alliance of Canada has surveyed its members and here are the top trends for 2019.
Trend #1 – HIIT is still HOT
In 2018, we continued to see an explosion of high-intensity interval training (otherwise known as HIIT) and many new chains and gyms that are basing their programs on wearable technology. As we head into 2019 this is not expected to change much.
Trend #2 – 60 is still the norm
People are short on time, but most are still choosing either the 60- or 45-minute classes over the 30-minute fitness snacking programs. As much as the 30-minute classes are good, they don’t leave participants with the same feeling as the longer versions.
Trend #3 – Yoga is not going anywhere anytime soon
While yoga has been a top discipline for a very long time (thousands of years) it has mostly been something that people feel they really need, not just to work and stretch tired muscles, but to give them a mental break each week. There has however been a trend in 2018 towards more experiential yoga classes to participate in unique settings, outside in winter, with farm animals, times or even at iconic locations. Lunchtime yoga classes continue to be well attended. Fitness enthusiasts strive to find opportunities anytime, anywhere.
Trend #4 – Using Fitness Technology is SMART
Working with groups of people at various fitness levels can be a challenge. By using group wearable technology individual members can see their personal progress during the class. Everyone is short on time and this can ensure that everyone is working at their perfect exertion rate.
Trend #5 – Certified Fitness Leaders Always
One might think that all gyms use certified instructors. This is not the case, but we’re happy to report that every year more gyms see the value in the training and education of leaders and are ensuring that the people they are hiring are certified with a national fitness association like the NFLA.
Trend #6 – Personal trainers report equal weight loss and strength training goals
While healthy living is always on trend, as we approach 2019 we surveyed our personal trainers and it seems the top two reasons why people visit them is still an equal distribution of those looking to lose weight and those who are looking to increase their individual strength.
Trend #7 – Dumbbells, dumbbells, dumbbells
There have been so many innovative products released in the past 20 years BUT, most strength training classes are still using dumbbells in their strength training classes regularly.
Trend #8 – Fascial Fitness
Many of our participants are dealing with muscle imbalance and using foam rollers and other techniques can help them self-manage. Only recently, we have come to understand that the muscular connective tissue – the fascia – is one of the most underestimated tissues of our body.
Together we develop, promote and implement national standards for the accreditation, training and registration of exercise professionals in Canada.
