Today is #December6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Today we remember the 14 young women who went to class the morning of December 6th, 1989, not thinking they may not leave school alive: Geneviève Bergeron Nathalie Croteau Hélène Colgan Barbara Daigneault Anne-Marie Edward Maud Haviernick Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz Maryse Laganière Maryse Leclair Anne-Marie Lemay Sonia Pelletier Michèle Richard Annie St-Arneault Annie Turcotte We remember that the violence of the gunman at #ÉcolePolytechnique was directed towards "feminists," who he felt had ruined his life. We recognize that 31 years later, women still face violence for pursuing an education, building a career, participating in politics, demanding equality. Women all over the world have faced even more harm and violence at home this year, during COVID-19. We remember missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people. We honour the resilience of trans and non-binary community members, who face high rates of sexual, physical and systemic violence. We remember those in our own communities no longer with us. And we demand action: We demand greater supports for women. We demand an intersectional recovery plan. We demand this in loving memory.
