The #WOTSL is a local, volunteer-run women’s sports league that provides gals from Toronto and the GTA with the chance to play recreational volleyball and basketball regardless of whether she’s a newbie or seasoned player. In its 4th year, the WOTSL provides a volleyball league from November to February and a #basketball league from February to May. Congrats to the players, volunteer coaches and organizers making an amazing difference in their local community. #seewhatshecando

Every Friday on the Petro-Canada Fuels Athletes page, we feature one of the recipients of the Petro-Canada Fuelling Athlete and Coaching Excellence (FACE™) grant program. Bump, set and spike your way into the weekend with today’s FACE™ Friday athlete, Volleyball player Kiera Van Ryk. Kiera’s interest in Volleyball started early - “being the youngest sister, I was always dragged to my older sister's sporting events. At five years old, I was in the gym watching and learning the game of Volleyball. Any chance I could get my hands on the ball during the games, I would jump right in.”
Kiera’s competitive spirit served her well throughout her junior career - after high school, she turned down offers from several schools in the U.S. to stay in Canada and play for the UBC Thunderbirds, saying “I just felt like Canada was the best place to learn and have an impact as early as I can.” As a young athlete, Kiera always looked up to Canada’s national team; one of her dreams came true when she made the team last year! Since then, Kiera played for Canada in international tournaments; she also still plays with the UBC Thunderbirds and in March, Kiera was named Canada West Player of the Year.
With the Tokyo 2020 Games coming up next year, Kiera’s working towards her next goal: Olympian. Let Kiera know you’ll cheering for her and the team in the comments. Go Canada go!
