Team Talk: Mental Health & Wellness with Ringette Ontario

SeeWhatSheCanDo is thrilled to sponsor Ringette Ontario's monthly team talks. 'Team Talk' is a social media series focused on connecting the Ringette community through conversations with players, coaches, officials and sport leaders.

If you missed last week's session, tune in now to hear Kayla Coombs (Counsellor & Mental Health Advocate) as she discusses mental health and wellness. This episode is hosted by Jaclyn Thomas.

In this episode, Kayla discusses how sport has influenced her life and her desire to work as a mental health advocate and registered social worker. Kayla's mental health advocacy is inspired by her own struggles with retiring from competitive basketball after sustaining a number of concussions in her career. Basketball had been a big part of her life and had come to define her identity. She discusses the importance of "knowing that you are more than an athlete". She urges listeners to discover talents and skills within ourselves that enable us to separate our identity from sport in order to truly appreciate the positive experience sport can have on our lives.

Her loss of identity and sense of community led her to struggle with depression and loss of hope. Her journey to healing taught her that taking care of her mental health is just as important as physical health, but often is neglected because of the stigma attached to misconceptions of mental health and wellness.

Tune in as Kayla shares the positives of taking control of your mental health and wellness. Learn about coping stratgies, self care tips, and how athletes suffering from injuries or forced into retirement can find support and hope.
