Sunday’s 2019 CWHL Clarkson Cup Final was a momentous day with close to 4700 fans in attendance, an all-female broadcast crew, and coast to coast live TV coverage in Canada and the USA. It was the second time the Calgary Inferno captured the Clarkson Cup, defeating Les Canadiennes de Montréal with a final score of 5-2 at Coca-Cola Coliseum. Inferno’s Zoe Hickel, Les Canadiens de Montréal’s Ann-Sophie Bettez and Inferno’s Kacey Bellamy were named the CWHL’s 3 Stars and Inferno’s Brianna Decker claimed the MVP of the game.
Beyond the terrific game, the Clarkson Cup Final was an incredible community gathering. Women’s hockey is on the rise and every generation of hockey lover in the stadium was there to celebrate and be a part of it. The atmosphere was electric and the stands were full of families, hockey teams from across Canada sporting their jerseys, fellow CWHL league players, volunteers and women’s hockey trailblazers like Clarkson Cup creator the Right Honorable Adrienne Clarkson.
Part of the joy of watching CWHL games is the accessibility of the game and players. For just $20 a game, fans watched Canada’s top hockey talent and got up close and personal with many of their favourite players. From player stories on the jumbotron to unplanned pre/post-game meetings and spontaneous high fives at the glass, these interactions were heartwarming and amazing.
