How a hockey mom got out of the stands and onto the ice

Sarah Morgenstern, co-founder of Savvy Mom and mother of three shares why she started playing hockey for the first time in her forties.

Why did you start playing hockey?

My son has been a passionate hockey player since he was four years old and has played rep hockey for 8 years. My younger daughter also played rep hockey for a number of years. As a result, we're a committed hockey family. As a family, we put in a lot of time in the rink and I always admired the hard work and skill of the players. I never thought it would be something I could do until my friend Liz started a hockey school for women called Skate Sister and talked me into coming out to the Learn to Play group. Luckily between my son and daughter, I didn't have to buy any hockey equipment. I was able to outfit myself from our basement, from things the kids had outgrown or were not using. I talked a few other friends into joining me and off we went last fall. Our Skate Sister coach did a great job of making us feel comfortable yet also taking us and the program seriously. We learned a lot in just a few months.

What do you love about playing hockey?

Hockey is an incredible workout. You feel it for the rest of the day and that gives you a sense of satisfaction. There is also a great sense of camaraderie which starts in the dressing room, where everyone chats as they get ready to go onto the ice. I am sure this is why kids love it too. Learning something new at my age is really satisfying too!
