The 2019 Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) season all comes down to this weekend and Sunday's Scotiabank Clarkson Cup that will have the Calgary Inferno pitted against Les Canadiennes and the game winner will be the League's 2019 Champion. First awarded in 2006 to Canada's National Women's Team, the Clarkson Cup was commissioned by the Right Honorable Madame Adrienne Clarkson, former Governor General of Canada. Her dream was to create a trophy that would be played for by North America's top women's hockey club teams. That dream has grown to include multiple top women's professional hockey teams that not only play in Canada, but also in the United States and China. In all, 251 players can find their names etched on the Clarkson Cup.
Before the noon puck drop this Sunday at the Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto, players, coaches, managers and supporters of all the teams came together Friday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in downtown Toronto to celebrate their season and recognize the season's best players and leaders of the league.
Most Valuable Player - Marie-Philip Poulin, Les Canadiennes
Defenseman of the Year - Erin Ambrose, Les Canadiennes
Goaltender of the Year - Alex Rigsby, Calgary Inferno
Rookie of the Year - Victoria Bach, Markham Thunder
Coach of the Year - Jim Jackson, Markham Thunder
Jayna Hefford Trophy - Marie-Philip Poulin, Les Canadiennes
Angela James Bowl - Marie-Philip Poulin, Les Canadiennes
Humanitarian Award - Mike Bartlett, Head of Community Affairs, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment
This year's Clarkson Cup Community Day involves two events. The first event takes place Saturday morning at the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) Launchpad in Toronto and will be an opportunity for children and teens in the community to participate in multi-sport activities with players from the league. Participants are given the opportunity to ask the players questions about growing up as female athletes and how to balance school, work, and sport.
Community Day also includes a CWHL Panel Discussion for students hosted Saturday morning at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel in downtown Toronto, where CWHL Olympic athletes, coaches, general managers, sport industry partners and other representatives will focus on discussing different aspects of being a part of the CWHL and women’s professional sports. Students will learn what it’s like to work in women’s professional sports at both a league and team level and hear about some of the unique opportunities and challenges that come with it.
It's a 12:00pm puck drop at the Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto. Shawn Hook will sing the national anthem and the 2019 CWHL Awards Nominee recipients, CWHL Alumni, the Minister of Science and Sport Kirsty Duncan, and more will be in attendance. When it's all said and done, the Clarkson Cup trophy will be presented to the winning team by the Former Governor General, The Right and Honourable Adrienne Clarkson or by the CWHL Commissioner in her absence.
