The 2019 Ontario Scotties: The battle to be the best in the province

Tenacity. Teamwork. Total focus.

All three were on display and so much more at the 2019 Women's and Men's Ontario Provincial Curling Championships held for the first time at the Woolwich Memorial Centre in Elmira, Ontario.  Beginning Sunday January 27th and continuing until Sunday February 3rd, some of the best men's and women's curling teams from across the province made their way to this historic town to compete to be crowned Ontario's best.  In addition, both women's and men's winners earn a spot at the 2019 Curling Canada's Scotties Tournament of Hearts later this month in Sydney, Nova Scotia and the 2019 Tim Horton's Briar to be held in early March in Brandon, Manitoba.

This year's Ontario Provincial Championships were hosted by both CurlON and the Elmira & District Curling Club.  Organizers and volunteers attended to every detail to ensure this annual premier provincial curling event was a great experience for everyone involved.

Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Championship

On the women's side of the Provincial Championships - also referred to as the Ontario Scotties - eight women's teams made up the field that would compete against each other in a round-robin format.  The team with the best round-robin record would earn a direct entry into the Championship final.  The remaining top three teams would battle it out in the playoffs.  If the third and fourth place teams are tied, they would first play to determine which team goes to the semi-final.  The semi-final will then determine which team heads to play the team with the best round-robin record of the tournament.  This year's participating teams (and their associated curling clubs) included:

Ottawa Curling Club's Team Homan dominated the round-robin play and earned the bye into the women's final with a 6-1 record.  Woodstock Curling Centre's Team Tippin first had to play Royal Canadian Curling Club's Team Duncan in the tie-breaker played Friday night at 7:30pm and took the win 10-5. Team Tippin then battled battled Mississauga Golf & Country Club's Team Murphy Saturday morning in the women's semi-final for the chance to play against Team Homan in the final.  Team Tippin made the most of the opportunity to get to the final and convincely beat Team Murphy by a score of 11-4.

The Championship Final

In the Women's Championship final played Saturday evening, Team Homan made the most of the momentum they had built up throughout the week of their round-robin play and took the final game by a score of 6-4  and earning the 2019 Women's Provincial Championship title.   This win also represented the 4th Ontario Championship title (2011, 2013, 2017 & 2019) for Team Homan.  With their victory, Team Homan earned their rightful place to represent Ontario at this year's Tournament of Hearts National Curling Championship.
