Get To Know: Brock University Ringette with Brienne Paterson

Fun Facts

  • Most Unique Major(s) on The Team
    • We have many players who are in the Concurrent Education program at Brock, all with a wide variety of teachables/specializations, but only a few that are in a specific bachelor program on their own. Forward Mahren Young is the lone player in Brock’s renowned Sport Management program, while defensive AP Maya Garnier is our only Psychology major. Forward Ashley Franko  is the only player pursuing a degree in Public Health, while I am the only Physical Education undergrad that is not in Con. Ed.

  • Who’s the Funniest Person on the Team?
    • There is absolutely no shortage of laughs and fun on our team, that is for sure, with players like forwards Allie Pepper-Murray, Jordan Cousins, and Raegan Hayter routinely providing lots of comedic relief on the bench and in the change room with their hilarious comments and wild dance moves. The member of our team with the funniest sayings and metaphors is without a doubt head coach Glenn Hayter, gracing us with laughable yet effective sayings like ‘Get on your horse and giddy up!’. They never fail to get us going!

  • Who’s Been Playing Ringette the Longest?
    • Goaltender Karlee Sutton, at 22 years of age, has been playing ringette the longest at 19 years! She first started playing out in bunnies but made the change to goalie 3 years into her ringette career and has never looked back.

  • Who Gets the Team Pumped Up Most?
    • Forward Raegan Hayter is well known on our team to get everyone fired up for a game and can often be heard checking our energy levels by yelling ‘Are you guys pumped?! Because I’m pumped!’. In addition, many of my teammates comment to me how much they enjoy and feel inspired by my pregame crease speeches after our warmup before we do our team cheer.

  • Who’s From a Town/City Furthest Away from Your University?
    • Defensive AP Maya Garnier is from Langley, British Colombia, 4,447 km from Brock University. It would take 1 day and 22 hours straight to drive there from Brock (thankfully she flies!).

  • Tell Us About the Current Team Dynamic and How Your Season is Going
    • We have had a great start to the season, remaining undefeated through two tournaments and 14 games heading into the University Challenge Cup. The integration of rookie and veteran members of the team was almost seamless from the first game we played, with great flow and team bonding evident from the start. Since then, the group dynamic has only improved as we’ve grown closer together on and off the ice as a team. Our trust and confidence in each other, strong defensive core, productive offense, with special goals from defense Laynee Partridge, Melissa Mann and Karsen Lewis, and devoted bench staff have been pivotal to our success as a team.

  • How Are You Preparing for The University Challenge Cup and What Is the Team Looking Forward to Most?
    • We have prepared for the University Challenge Cup through various practices, exhibition games, and off ice team training sessions. Our goal is to keep on the ice as much as we can during exams and over the Christmas break leading up to the challenge cup. I believe the team is looking forward to playing teams from across the country the most, as it is one of the few times in our ringette careers that we get to play teams from outside the province. We are looking forward to being competitive in the tournament and having the opportunity to showcase the development of university ringette programs across the country.

  • What is a Goal You Are Setting for Yourself Individually and a Goal Your Team is Setting Collectively? (Can be both ringette related and academic)
    • My personal goal for UCCs is to use my experience from past challenge cups to be a positive and supportive pillar for my teammates to work hard and leave it all on the ice during the physically and mentally demanding 10 game tournament. Our goal as a team is to consistently play at the competitive high level that we are capable of throughout the lengthy tournament and representing the Brock Badgers to the best of our ability, demonstrating the advancement of our program over the past few years.
