The last day of ringette preliminaries at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer saw some intense competition as teams battled for spots in the playoff round that starts tomorrow. 

 

The battle of the east started the day when New Brunswick and Nova Scotia met on the ice this morning.  New Brunswick came away with their first win at the games, posting a 9-4 victory over Nova Scotia. Moncton’s Britney Snowdon dominated the scoring with five goals and two assists.

 

“We knew we had a slow start, but we regrouped and we knew we were capable of so much more,” said Snowdon, who was also the flag bearer for Team New Brunswick. “Now we need to take it one game at a time, focus on us and play our game.”

 

The battle of the undefeated in Pool A happened in the second game of the day when Ontario and Quebec matched up. Both teams left nothing on the ice, with Ontario coming away with a 4-2 victory over rival Quebec. Mississauga Emily Power opened up the scoring, with Nepean’s Emma Kelly following that up with a hat trick.

 

“We wanted to come out with a quick start to get in their heads and I think our parents and fans helped with that too, they were so loud,” said Kelly following the big win. “Now we have to keep our head in the game and we need to focus on moving up in the playoff round.”

 

Tied with one win and two losses, British Columbia and Saskatchewan matched up in the third game of the day, with British Columbia coming away with a 6-4 win. Richmond’s Hailey Sutherland-Takasaki and Langley’s Emma Paradis each picked up pairs in the game.

 

The last game of the day gave another over capacity crowd some double overtime excitement between Alberta and Manitoba. Winnipeg’s Alana Lesperance scored four goals for Manitoba, including the winner in double overtime for an 8-7 win. Manitoba finished the preliminary round undefeated.

19:00 – ON vs. winner of 9:00 game
